“Intelopolis” is a portmanteau of “intelligent” and “polis,” a traditional suffix for city (as in “metropolis”).
Intelopolis is an independent, micro-scale analyst practice focused on select aspects of what’s still known as “smart cities.”
Ted Cuzzillo is a longtime industry analyst and journalist in the technology industry. He’s been covering emerging areas of analytics since 2007.
CURRENT FOCUS
Smart cities, civic tech, and civic innovation. The general focus is broad to provide context and relevance for the specialty: nascent trends and vendors.
PAST FOCUSES
Tableau and data visualization. He was the only analyst at the first Tableau customer conference, held in 2008 in Seattle at the Edgewater Inn.
The new variety of data analysts, aka “cowboys,” that arose as Tableau and other desktop data tools came onto the market and matured and as data-hegemonic IT departments adapted. The new variety of data analysts were at first called “cowboys.” But in only a few years they became the mainstream.
Data storytelling. Though this term has been widely presumed by data analysts to mean a series of data charts, the real meaning is shown in such stories as Moneyball by Michael Lewis. Good data stories are primarily just stories but with data as the payload. They’re not just more data.
PAST PUBLISHING VENUES
Ted Cuzzillo has published many articles and blog posts since 2007. These are the main venues.
TDWI, in its weekly newsletter BI This Week (since renamed Upside), BI Business Journal, and TDWI Research.
Information Management, no longer publishing.
Datadoodle, the forebear of Intelopolis. Datadoodle was the well known and widely read weblog that ran from early 2007 to late 2019. Many Datadoodle archives have been folded into Intelopolis. Intelopolis didn’t fall far from the tree.
