Google guys come to shake up BI with natural language

Kindergarten may have taught you all you need to know about life. But you may need to watch “Mr. Peabody and His Boy Sherman,” an animated, 1960s-era TV series for kids, to truly appreciate an interesting new natural-language product called ThoughtSpot.

ThoughtSpot’s natural-language querying represents a new stage of maturity for casual BI users — a step up even from visualization, which was a step up from rows and columns. ThoughtSpot users get data with natural language queries, otherwise known as questions.

Impressions of Strata Conference

Strata buzzes. Other events go to sleep for long stretches. But Strata+Hadoop World, at least the one in Silicon Valley if not those held in New York and London, is the only event I’ve seen with buzz that comes close to the buzziest of all, the Tableau conference. And like Tableau, Strata is growing. It switched venues this year from the Santa Clara Convention Center to the much bigger San Jose Convention Center, and it still sold out.

First sip of Context Relevant hints at a winner

Most product vendors can talk for half an hour without even one specific case. But Stephen Purpura, CEO of the predictive analytics startup Context Relevant, actually had a story about something useful — the time his system used scant data to correctly point to a barely known winemaker.

Spotting the wine started with a sip, of course. But as you might imagine, Purpura then fed it to his prediction machine.
